Updated Host Page..

This is just a small post to tell you all that I’ve updated the Host page. That’s the page that describes what you’ll get in being hosted along with what sorts of things I will and will not host.

I’ll be allowing galleries and gallery scripts from now on. That is to say, only galleries that show off your designs, art or photography. Not allowed are galleries like anime, celebrity or other such things.

If you’re going to use a gallery, I’d highly suggest zenPhoto. It’s very easy to use and not bloated like other gallery scripts out there.

Blah to Cutenews..

Before I begin this rant, I want to clarify that Cutenews is not banned on this domain. You can use it all you like. I just strongly dislike it and prefer that people use other scripts to blog with instead (if you’re on my site or not, my opinion is the same)

I’m not going to scold anyone for using Cutenews, I used it for a long time before I moved to CutenewsRU then finally to WordPress. I can understand how WordPress seems really scary and bloated and "Omg I have no idea what I’m doing". I didn’t have a clue either.

But you need to try. Take baby steps. I’ve learned to fall in love with WordPress and I really can’t see myself using anything else now.

Cutenews is old. It hasn’t been updated in almost two years. Flexer (the guy who wrote the script) pretty much stopped development once he released his license policy and swore people would pay for an unsafe script.

Security exploits have been plugged but technology (and the coding involved) changes rapidly. I personally don’t feel safe using Cutenews as my blog / news script.

May I suggest an alternative?

PHP FanUpdate is similar to Cutenews in the way that it’s small and easy to install and integrate into pages. It was made for keeping a news page for updated fanlistings but you can easily use it for maintaining your website. I’ve used this personally for my defunct RPG development blog and thought it was very easy and to the point. In fact, every single page on that RPG blog was maintained by PHP FanUpdate, even the content pages.

Plus, it’s much more secure. It was last updated in November 2007.

I just thought I should put my opinion out there. This isn’t a post directly talking to hostees so if you’re using Cutenews and think I’m scolding you, I’m not. I really wish no one in the whole world were using Cutenews but the fact remains that people still do (I’ve seen at least ten websites today using it).

Later on I’ll be talking about more scripts like this. Because I’m a dork and I love playing with scripts.

Accounts Deleted..

I’ve deleted three accounts and all their files today.

I’m seriously not joking at all about the three-month policy (read the rules). So if your account goes inactive (that means no touching or uploading or editing of any kind) for a period of three months, out you go.

"Three months?! That’s too little!" No, no it’s not. I’m looking for quality websites that update frequently. If you really loved your website and were dedicated you would update more than the measly once-every-three-months required to keep your site active here. That means updating four times a year.

I do not send out notices when your site has been removed. It’s up to you to be responsible and care for your site.

Pages Added!..

I’ve added all the old pages from before the WordPress move.

I’m pretty sure I’ve fixed all the old links to reflect the new structure and all but if you come across a broken link or some other error feel free to leave a comment about it and I’ll fix it.

Next up: Updating the (really old) Roommates page.

Hello, WordPress!..

I really wanted something smaller to use than WordPress for this domain but then I thought "My personal site has way less pages and yet it uses WordPress!". So WordPress it is.

The script’s really grown on me in the last months. We’re bonding and I every time I need to use a blog script or CMS I just turn to WordPress. For some reason I just can’t use others. Either they’re missing features I like from WordPress or just not as nice looking, etc etc.

So look forward to more domain updates and more geeky changes.

The server move’s gone pretty well. I’m still dealing with one site that’s refusing to work (poop =/ Sorry, Sue) but other than that things have been pretty nice.
